From the alt.surfing 'When Was the Golden Age of Surfing?' thread;
Mine, in the far Northeast, was sometime between 1966 and maybe 1974 or so.
More waves, more swells than Mark remembers from the '80s, a new way of
living coming along after the '50s , shortboards coming in and logs going
away. Before Reagan, before twinfins and the manufacturers loss of
credibility, before MADD and the nanny state and litigation madness, a
Kennedy/ Camelot sort of innocence still in fashion...and I don't mean
clothes. $50 surf cars, $125 new boards, cheeseburgers that cost less than a
buck. Cancer was astrology, not a sun-related problem. Penicillin cured just
about everything. Crowd was ...20 guys, over a mile of beach breaks.
The world was gonna be a better place. We were going to clean it up and make
it happen, all of us including the ragtag surf rats. Funny, it didn't seem
to turn out quite the way we planned. But then again, it could have turned
out worse.
But that was MY Golden Age, not THE . Maybe. It really might start next
Thursday afternoon, after lunch, who knows....
To warp Bonzer's line-
"The Golden Age is when you're having the most fun"
Doc- and it ain't over yet, is it
